High School Students Take a Stand

We all know how important part of our lives art is. Art is beautifying our surroundings, art keeps us linked to our inner self, art helps us express emotions and ideas. However, art is not just about beauty and aesthetic pleasure. More than any other art form, contemporary art has the power to provoke dialogue, deep and critical thinking, provoke questioning and empathy. Highs school students were asked to choose a topic that it’s important to them and make a statement using any art medium or form. 

They had to do few steps to finish the whole project. Brainstorm ideas, make sketches, choose topics that are important to them, research, find different viewpoints in the same subject and finally choose the best medium/art material to visualize that concept. They all had different subjects that took their interest. I found out that they are occupied with important social questions like feminism, environment sustainability, marketing and fashion, politics... I was impressed by their higher order thinking skills. Mexican Metal Folk Art

One of the least known, most versatile, and most beautiful expressions of Mexican folk art ishojalata (tin art work), also known in some parts of Mexico as, lamina  or lata. Ebru Painting

The word ebru (cloud, cloudy) or abru (water face) means in Turkish the technique of paper marbling. Marbling (Ebru painting) is the art of creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing color pigments on a pan of oily water and then transforming this pattern to paper. so after we watched a video of authentic Ebru painting we created our own version of this technique by using nail polish. Students loved it!

Journey On a Cloud , inspired by Marc Chagall

Daydreaming in art class is encouraged! We had a blast with level 9 and 10 outside in the beautiful sunny day, reading this fun book, learning about the artist Marc Chagall and looking at the clouds and their unusual shapes. Afterwards, we got back in our classroom to put all these daydreamed images on paper.
 

Name Sculpture

Students from Level 9 and 10 in art class are working on a cardboard sculpture, using the letters of their names as a structure. These young artists needed to make sure the sculpture is balanced and the letters are arranged in a way so it can stand on it's own.

Printmaking

There are 3 top printmaking methods: Relief, Intaglio ,Lithography. In each of these there is a vast of different "techniques". With Level 12 and 13 we explored the styrofoam printing technique. First step was creating sketches and designs inspired from Ancient Greece, and after they were happy with their designs, they transferred it on a Styrofoam using cutting tools. The last step was making the actual prints, which is always exciting since you never know how exactly your print will look in the end.
