Art with a voice

I love when students recognize the power of art!

This student used his artwork to share a personal perspective on a global social and cultural subject.

Please read the artist's statement to learn more about the artwork and the story behind.

The graffiti artwork that I created contained three basic languages and colors that represented an aspect of the thing. I will not include every single detail of the artwork in this reflection as art is subjective and I encourage people to find their own meaning in the artwork. I also introduced an outlook of life that plays an important part in the meaning. The phrase is: “Perfection in the imperfections”. So without further adieu, here is the translation:

Хан Вех

The term “gaan weg” in afrikaans translates to english as “go away”. The inspiration for this phrasing came from the intentional hate against groups in the very culturally diverse countries in the balkans. The use of 3 languages in creating the main word of the artwork is to represent the confusion of the receivers of the message of hate and how it doesn’t translate well as is the case with an afrikaans word being changed into a macedonian alphabet. The shading of the letters indicates the fact that there is a fading of hate but it is still very prevalent in cultures and their views on the people among them. The use of white in contrast with the black background again shows that it really is seen and noticed.

Please

The use of the word please in the background is to not only further add onto the confusion of the mixed languages but also to represent the officials in trying to combat the racial and systemised hate. Even though it is made out of flashing bright letters, the white and glowing issue catches the attention much more than the legal attempts at combating the issue -  which eventually fades into the background.
